OK. I may be a tad obsessed with warm cozy drinks. I seriously cannot start my day without a warm beverage. Even in the summer. THE SUMMER. Ok, sometimes I make them iced (barely).
One of my warm-beverage-must-have’s is a base of WATER. I am just not a huge fan of warm nut milks! And I am sure you have seen your fair share of warm turmeric milk recipes floating around on the interweb – they are all the rage. But they all have a dairy or nut milk base. I just can’t get into it! I have tried and tried these recipes and they are…OK. But not sensational. And if I’m going to put all that effort into getting the ingredients, warming it on the stove and then blending..it better be sensational! So I decided to experiment a bit with using water as a base, and the results were delicious! And much quicker than the traditional turmeric milk.
So, what’s the big deal about turmeric anyways? Turmeric root has been used as healing herb for ages, and is actually one of the most studied herbs in science, and for good reason. It is a powerhouse of awesome. The active ingredient in turmeric is known as curcumin, and hosts a laundry list of benefits, but one of the most well-known is its anti-inflammatory effect in the body. Why should you care about inflammation? Well, inflammation is the root of almost every disease and health issue. As a holistic nutrition consultant, when trying to discover the root of a clients health concern, signs of inflammation usually indicate something going on inside the body. Inflammation is your body’s natural ability to fight infection or something that may hurt or damage you, but when this turns into chronic inflammation, that is when things can start to turn ugly. So targeting inflammation with anti-inflammatory foods can be a great starting point for many!
Ironically, I’m sitting poolside in Mazatlan Mexico as I write this. I have brought my Vitamix down with me and I swear to you it took every ounce of my being not to bring stuff down to make a warm drink for myself in the mornings. I had a text conversation with a friend and she ever so gently told me I was being a bit ridiculous. You know, she was probably right. But I definitely look forward to this daily ritual. And that my friends, is just a fact of life.
When you are a stay at home mom, it can be those little moments of self-care that make the day easier. I perk up a bit in the morning when the thought of making a blender latte enters my mind! Like, legit giddiness.
Do you have any daily rituals that you couldn’t live without? I would love to hear about them in the comments!
